The internet service in Pakistan has been available since 1990. Information and communications technology (ICT) is one of the fastest growing industries in the Pakistan. In 2001, around 1.3% population of the country were using internet. By the end of 2006, figure had raised to 6.5% and in 2012, it had reached to 10%. At present, 11% of the population is using internet in Pakistan.
According to the report of International Telecommunications Union (ITU), there are 20 million internet users in Pakistan while Internet Services Providers Association of Pakistan (ISPAK) said that there are only 10 million internet users in Pakistan. Apart from these two reports, the IT think tanks said that internet users have crossed 30 million slab at present and number of broadband and mobile internet users have been increased. Among 50% users access the internet from their mobile phones that’s why cellular companies have been shifted towards cheap internet packages as compare to SMS and call packages.
According to report, internet is available in all major cities of the country and it is increasing rapidly. As compare to DSL, demand of broadband and mobile internet is increasing day by day. The Google study predicts that mobile internet usage to overtake desktop internet access very soon. Moreover, 3G and 4G service is available in the country since April 14, 2014. The government at the time of 3G and 4G auction had earned $903 million from 3G auction and $210 million from 4G auction that created the revenue of $1.1 billion collectively.
The trend of searching social media sites is high as compare to other sites. Most of the internet users in Pakistan spend their time on using Facebook, Twitter or other similar sites. Research states that 80% of internet users in Pakistan spend over an hour on Internet every day. At present, 8 million users are on Facebook, 3.5 million on Word Press, 2 million on Twitter, 1.4 million visit YouTube, and 1.2 million on LinkedIn. In the running year, 7% growth on social media sites has been observed.
